Tim Murphy Obituary, Cause of Death – Former U.S. Congressman Dies at 73

Tim Murphy, former U.S. Congressman and Pennsylvania State Senator, passed away on July 18, 2026, at the age of 73. His cause of death was an apparent heart attack at his home in Upper St. Clair, Pennsylvania.

Born in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1952, Murphy was one of eleven children. He graduated from Wheeling Jesuit University in 1974 and earned a Ph.D. in psychology from the University of Pittsburgh in 1979. Before entering politics, he worked as a clinical psychologist, taught at the University of Pittsburgh, and became known locally as “Dr. Tim” through radio and television appearances.

Murphy served in the Pennsylvania State Senate from 1996 to 2002, where he authored the 1997 Pennsylvania Patient Bill of Rights, increasing accountability for managed health care insurance. He was then elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, serving Pennsylvania’s 18th Congressional District from 2003 to 2017.

He became nationally recognized for his mental health advocacy, most notably as the author of the Helping Families in Mental Health Crisis Act, which was incorporated into the 21st Century Cures Act (2016). This legislation provided billions in federal funding and restructured mental health programs nationwide. Murphy also championed veterans’ mental health, supported Pennsylvania’s steel industry, and raised awareness about opioid addiction.

Though his career ended in 2017 following a personal scandal, Murphy’s legislative legacy remains tied to his groundbreaking work in mental health reform. Colleagues and community leaders have remembered him as a passionate advocate for mental health, veterans, and public health reform.

Visitation will be held on July 24, 2026, at Beinhauer – Peters Township Funeral Home in McMurray, PA, with a funeral service on July 25, 2026, at Resurrection Parish, St. Thomas More Church in Pittsburgh.

Tim Murphy will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, psychologist, and public servant whose contributions to mental health advocacy will continue to impact lives for generations. 🕊️
