A Memphis mother has been charged with first-degree murder after police say she fatally shot a man found inside her home, leading to a deadly confrontation that has sparked debate over self-defense and home protection.
Authorities identified the victim as Rodderius Morton, who was discovered with a gunshot wound in the front yard of a residence on Travis Road. Responding officers found Morton suffering from his injuries, but he was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
According to a police affidavit, Kendra Scott, 36, told investigators she discovered Morton hiding under her child’s bed. She reportedly said: “I saw a dude under my kids’ bed, and I did what I had to do.” A juvenile witness confirmed hearing Scott yell, “Who’s at my house?” before the confrontation moved outside.
Police stated that Morton was not armed when he left the home. Witnesses reported that Scott and Morton argued on the porch before a single gunshot was fired. Another witness told investigators Morton had entered the home through the back door after being invited inside, raising further questions about the circumstances.
Scott has been charged with first-degree murder and employment of a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony. She is currently being held without bond.
The case has raised questions about home protection, self-defense claims, and the legal boundaries of using deadly force. Investigators are reviewing evidence, including Scott’s prior statements, one of which allegedly suggested she would shoot someone if she ever found a man inside her home.
